"Everyone has his burden. What counts is how you carry it." is a quote by Merle Miller

I see this quote as a message to us all to take make the best out of our own circumstances Orrrr to take lemons and make lemonade.

In "Thank you M'am" by Langston Hughes, we meet Roger and Ms. Jones.  Roger tries to steal from Ms. Jones and instead of bringing Roger to jail, she brings him home.  She brings him home and feeds him and talks to him.  She is not a woman who has lots of money and she too has had hard times but instead of wallowing in her own self-pity, she chose to help out a young boy who needed guidance.  She helped Roger out when he needed it the msot. She chose to help make Roger's life a little better because he obviously had no one looking out for him in his life.

Roger was not her responsibility.  She took responsibility because she knows what it is like to be in need of help and assistance.  She decided add Roger and his needs to her own personal burdens in an effort to save him.
